At the Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea or coffe and discuss death.
The objective is a group directed discussion on death, loss and anything related to the theme of death. There is no agenda, objectives or themes or even any specific outcome that needs to be obtained. ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’
The Death Cafe will always be offered:
- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space
- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action
- Works on a non profit basis
- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food
- and of course there will be cake!
Death Cafe is a ‘social franchise’ which means that the Bedford Death Cafe has signed up to the guide and principles that allow it to use the Death Cafe name, post events on their website and talk to the press as an affiliate of Death Cafe.
Death Cafes have spread quickly across Europe, North America and Australasia. As of today, there are 4080 Death Cafes in 42 countries since September 2011.
The Death cafe model was developed by Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid, based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz and they started in Hackney, East London.
